Thanks to Irene, I was invited to a food tasting session at The Banquet yesterday afternoon. When I received the e-mail from Irene, I was a tad excited. I’ve heard certain rumors regarding The Banquet’s quality lately. I cannot comment on that, because I’ve never been there. What I can do, however, is taste and judge the food based on my “expert culinary instincts”. Of course, everyone knows that “expert culinary instincts” is short for “I’m gonna make things up and make you believe it”.

Now, The Banquet is a restaurant which offers a fusion of Western and Chinese cuisine. Being a Halal restaurant (meaning no pork is served), it’s suitable for Muslims and Non-Muslims alike. Located on Jalan Datuk Tawi Sli, the restaurant can be spotted from a distance. The large building sports a unique design, which is sure to wow first-timers who wish to dine here. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve never dined here, but I have laid my eyes on its exterior a number of times, and I have to say, I am still impressed with the modern, contemporary feel of the place.
I reached the place at exactly 12pm. I was quite surprised to see that some of the bloggers - Jimmy, Emmelina, Cyril and Amiey - were already there. We were joined by a couple more bloggers later, whose blog addresses I will list down at the end of the post. Now, before I move on to the review, I just gotta mention that I don’t know the name of the dishes. I think we’re supposed to get them, but I haven’t received anything yet, so I’m just going to guess and see if I can nail it.
The first item we were given was a thick green liquid served with an ice cube in a fancy glass. Peculiar? Definitely. Judge on your own.

Mustard green juice. Goddamn. To me..it tastes kinda like seaweed. Emmelina thinks it tastes like guava though. Nobody can seem to agree on one single taste. It was a bit disgusting, to be honest. Yet, oddly it has a taste that makes you want to keep on drinking. I didn’t finish it. Recommended to people who want to try something different and healthy.
The second item, was a cold dish.

The cold dish, consists of spring rolls, butter prawn, slices of chicken, fruit salad and..something which appears to be barbequed chicken dimsum? It was pretty darn good. My favourite was the spring roll. It had cheese inside and I was rather surprised when I took the first bite. The butter prawn was full of flavor, the sliced chicken was soft and tender, just the way I like it and the dimsum was just perfect. Definitely a yes from me. My stomach’s growling just thinking about it.
Next up, we each had a bowl of crab meat soup.

Crab meat soup. What else can I say? It tastes like..well, crab meat soup. The soup had the right texture. Not too watery, not too thick. Maybe just a tad too thick for some people, but I found it to be at the perfect condition. The crab meat was fresh and tender. Another yes from me. Simple as that.
Then came the fish.

I’m not really sure what this dish is called, but I’m guessing it’s Thai Style Fried Fish judging from spicy and sour sauce. I loved the crunchy skin, and the tender flesh, but I just somehow can’t help but think that I’ve tasted better ones before. Verdict? I’d eat it if someone ordered it for me, but if it were up to me, it wouldn’t be the first thing that’s going to pop up in my mind when ordering.
After the fish, we moved on to the spicy roasted chicken.

To me, this dish was not so great. In fact, I’d dare say that it’s the least memorable out of all the dishes. The chicken was too dry for me and I think they could’ve done a better job of soaking it in the spicy sauce. Maybe that’s just the way the dish is supposed to be served, but I didn’t touch it again afterwards. For what it’s worth, they did well with the presentation, so I guess the dish isn’t entirely a failure.

After the chicken, the butter prawn came.
I also didn’t like this dish very much, despite the fact that I cannot get enough of prawns. I found the prawns to be rather tasteless, but maybe that was due to the fact that I peeled off the shell, which according to Mao, is not recommended when eating butter prawn. Too bad though, I just can’t seem to get myself to eat prawn along with its shell. Looong story. In any case, I’d say that I might give the prawns a second chance if I ever eat at The Banquet again.
We also had the chance to try out duck meat.

I’m not sure what this dish is called, but apparently it’s covered in black sauce. I’m guessing soy sauce? I have to say that this is a must try dish. Most of us agreed that the duck was the best dish out of all the dishes. Soft, juicy and just a little bit chewy, the duck meat is cooked to perfection. I should mention though that it is not boneless, so yeah. Loved the dish, would definitely eat it again.

I had a short break and when I returned, this was on the table. A yam basket.
The yam basket was quite refreshing in a sense. If you noticed the dishes so far are all meat. So, having some veggies equals good. I loved the veggies, though they could have been better. Nothing special there. The usual suspects when it comes to stir fried vegetables. I can’t say the same for the basket though. To be honest, I’ve never enjoyed eating yam baskets. The veggies, good. The basket itself, not so.
Our second last dish was..um, sticky rice in..er, lotus leaves?

I swear, at this point, I was too full to scoop out the rice. I couldn’t look at it without feeling sick, but since it was our job to taste the food, I took a small portion out. The rice was sticky, rather glutinous as you can see. Cyril was scooping out spoon after spoon of the rice. It would’ve been great if the rice was served along with the rest instead of being the dish served before dessert. I mean, at least we’d have something to eat with the rice no? Still, the rice was decent. If it weren’t for the fact that I was bloated, I’d definitely have more.
Last but not least, dessert.

The dessert was enjoyable. I love how they mixed mango, pomelo and sago into one dessert. Just look at the color. You would expect it to taste nasty, but after taking one sip, you’d want more. I scooped mine out dry. What does that tell you?
All in all, we came, we saw, we ate. We also left with a full stomach. Of course, this wouldn’t be possible without The Banquet. Thank you, thank you very much for inviting us to taste the food. Honesty is the best policy, I hope that the review doesn’t result in any anger/broken heart/disappointment.
Of course, a gathering of some sort isn’t complete without some candid photos.

Goddamit I look so weird. Ugh. Anyway, that’s that for the post. To check out posts from other bloggers, check out the links. Once again, major props to The Banquet for sponsoring the food and Irene for the heads up. Fuh. All that dieting gone in one day. X___X
